Cotton vs. Cashmere: The Case for the Year-Round Stripe Sweater

Why the fabric you choose matters as much as the pattern.

The breton stripe sweater comes in every fabric imaginable. Cashmere, wool, wool-cashmere blends, silk-cotton mixes, acrylic, and everything in between. Each fabric tells a different story about how and when you'll actually wear the sweater, which matters considerably more than most people think when they're buying.

We make tutto sweaters in 100% cotton. Here's why — and when cotton is the right choice.

The Case for Cashmere and Wool

We'll give credit where it's due. A wool or cashmere breton stripe is an extraordinary garment. The weight, the softness, the way a quality wool-cashmere blend drapes and holds its structure — these are genuinely wonderful things. For fall and winter months, for cold climates, for the customer who wants maximum luxury and warmth, it's hard to argue against.

The trade-offs are real though. Wool and cashmere sweaters require careful hand washing or dry cleaning. They're warm — which is wonderful in January and impractical in May. They sit heavily in layering situations. And at the price points quality wool-cashmere commands, most people buy one or two and treat them carefully.

The Case for Cotton

Cotton has a different set of qualities that make it, in many ways, more genuinely useful.

It's a year-round fabric. A cotton breton works in March, in August, in October. In coastal climates and warm-weather cities — Charleston, coastal Florida, Southern California, anywhere you spend time near water — cotton is the fabric that actually gets worn.

It's low maintenance. tutto sweaters are hand-wash cold or gentle cycle. No dry cleaning, no anxiety. The sweater that's easy to wear gets worn more.

It holds color brilliantly. This matters enormously for stripe sweaters, where the color is the point. Cotton takes dye well and keeps it — the Light Blue Berry, the Saltwater Emerald, the Tennis Ball are still vivid after years of washing.

It breathes. A cotton knit has a natural give and breathability that wool doesn't match in mild temperatures. This is why the breton stripe became associated with coastal life in the first place — it was the right fabric for the right climate.

When to Choose Each

Choose a heavier wool or cashmere breton when: fall and winter are your primary seasons, warmth is your primary need, and you want maximum luxury.

Choose cotton (tutto) when: you want a sweater you'll wear year-round, you live in a warm or coastal climate, you want easy care, or you simply prefer the feel and weight of cotton. This is also the sweater to reach for in transitional seasons — the months when everything else feels like too much or not enough.

Many women own both and reach for each at the right moment. But if you're choosing one all-season stripe sweater that will actually get worn, cotton is the answer.
